About the Race

Our Race is inspired by the popular TV show The Amazing Race—but with a meaningful twist! RFL youth are grouped into teams of four, each accompanied by a volunteer driver to ensure safety and prevent any overly competitive driving. Just like the show, teams must solve clues and travel to various stops where they complete different challenges.

Here’s the twist:
Every task in our Race is designed to help fill life-skill and learning gaps that are common among the young adults we serve. Many Ready for Life participants haven’t had the chance to experience or learn key “adulting” skills that others often take for granted. The Amazing Resource Race gives them a hands-on, supportive, and fun way to gain real-life knowledge and experience.

Past activities have included:

  • Applying for an apartment or job

  • Changing a flat tire and checking oil levels

  • De-escalating tense situations

  • Team building and communication

  • Meal planning and budgeting

  • Opening a bank account

  • Navigating public transportation

  • Understanding the true cost of pet ownership

It’s a full day of active learning—without ever cracking open a textbook! After the Race, everyone celebrates together at the Finish Line Party at Quaker Steak and Lube.

Beyond practical skills, this event also creates space for moments that many of our youth missed out on—like decorating a car, attending a dance, or participating in a scavenger hunt. The Amazing Resource Race helps them build life skills and lasting memories as part of the RFL family.

This powerful event impacts over 40 former foster youth in our community each year and offers great visibility for companies interested in sponsoring a team or a Race Stop.
